BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- China released the results of the seventh national census on Tuesday.
The census, the largest of its kind across the world, helps China figure out its population size, structure and distribution as well as the latest demographic changes and trends, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The latest census conducted last year is expected to offer strong statistical support for the country to advance high-quality development and formulate more targeted strategies and policies to promote long-term and balanced population development, the NBS said.

A total of 679,000 census-taking institutions were created in the country's provinces, cities, counties, townships and villages, and more than 7 million census takers were organized to document demographic information door to door across the country.
The census collected data including name, ID number, gender, marital status, education and profession of Chinese citizens.
China's population on the mainland has reached 1.41178 billion, up 5.38 percent from the previous census in 2010, the latest census data showed.
The figure does not include Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan residents and foreigners who live in the mainland's 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, according to the NBS (See below for statistics on Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan residents and foreigners).
Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Residents and Foreigners
Based on the results of the Seventh National Population Census, released as follows are the major data about residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of the Chinese mainland (hereinafter referred to as provinces) at 00:00 hours of November 1, 2020 and registered for the census:
Population
The census saw a registration of 371,380 residents from Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 55,732 residents from Macao SAR, 157,886 residents from Taiwan, and 845,697 foreigners residing in 31 provinces, totaling 1,430,695 persons.
Sex Composition
Of the above population, 736,286 persons were males, and 694,409 persons were females. Specifically, of the residents from Hong Kong SAR, there were 202,296 males and 169,084 females. Of the residents from Macao SAR, there were 29,067 males and 26,665 females.
Of the residents from Taiwan, there were 102,897 males and 54,989 females. Of the foreigners, there were 402,026 males and 443,671 females.
Duration of Stay
Of the above population, 40,659 persons stayed for less than 3 months, 56,342 persons stayed for 3 to 6 months, 166,884 persons stayed for 6 to 12 months, 248,174 persons stayed for 1 to 2 years, 314,954 persons stayed for 2 to 5 years, and 603,682 persons stayed for more than 5 years.
Purposes of Staying in Chinese Mainland
Of the above population, 77,008 persons came for business, 444,336 persons came for employment, 219,761 persons came for study, 419,517 persons came for settlement, 74,735 persons came to visit relatives, and 195,338 persons came for other purposes.
Geographic Distribution
By residence of the above persons, the top ten provinces in terms of population size were as follows:
Guangdong with 418,509 persons
Yunnan with 379,281 persons
Shanghai with 163954 persons
Fujian with 106,248 persons
Beijing with 62,812 persons
Jiangsu with 58,201 persons
Zhejiang with 46,189 persons
Guangxi with 26,043 persons
Shandong with 21,829 persons
Liaoning with 20,562 persons
The remaining 127,067 persons resided in other provinces.
Notes:
1. All figures in this Communiqué are preliminary results.
2. The above population refers to residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of the Chinese mainland at the reference time of the census and registered for the census, while those shortly staying for business, travel and other purposes were not included.
